Football: Fashola to Honor Late broadcasters Okonkwo, Folorunsho



Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, has concluded plans to honour two of Nigeria’s broadcast journalists who died in an auto crash on Aug. 2.A statement issued by Ademola Olajire, Chief Media Officer of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), in Abuja, said Messrs Ishola Folorunsho and Ernest Okonkwo, would be honoured posthumously.The honour would be bestowed on both journalists during the 2013 Federation Cup grand finale,The late Okonkwo ran commentaries on Radio Nigeria with a unique style of giving appropriate qualifying adjectives to all those involved, be they players, administrators or referees.He coined such nicknames as `Man mountain’ (Emmanuel Okala), `Blockbuster’ (Aloysius Atuegbu), `Mathematical’ (Segun Odegbami), `Harmattan’ (Uwem Ekarika), `Chairman’ (Christian Chukwu), `Justice’ (Adokiye Amiesimaka), `Slow poison’ (Idowu Otubusin), et cetera.Folorunsho, the second awardee, nicknamed `Mr it-is-a-goal’, was another versatile and colourful commentator, who also worked for Radio Nigeria.“Gov. Fashola has concluded plans to name the Media Gallery at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere after the late broadcasters.“Family members of the two late commentators would also be invited to the grand finale, to receive the posthumous honours on their behalf,’’ the statement added.
