Justice Delayed: 40 Years After Chile Coup, Families of Slain Victims Still Hoping For Justice

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Chilean coup d’etat that ousted the constitutional president of Chile, Salvador Allende, from office and gave rise to the vicious dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet 11th September 1973. The Chile 40 Years On network has been set up to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Chilean human and social tragedy brought about by Pinochet’s dictatorship.
Thousands of people were tortured and killed, others ‘disappeared’ at the hands of the authorities, the secret police and more were illegally detained. Men, women and children were rounded up by the military and taken from their homes. Most were never seen alive by their families again. 1 million people were forced into exile.
We also aim to celebrate life and the progress made by Chilean people in their quest for democracy and justice.
Through this page, and direct contact, the Chile 40 Years On network aims to link up and facilitate memorial events and initiatives to celebrate survival and life in different parts of the UK, so that there can be a critical mass of awareness of the significance of these events for Chile and the rest of the world.
Protesters marking the 40th anniversary of Chile's military coup are clashing with police, throwing rocks and gasoline bombs and setting up flaming barricades.
Police arrested 13 people early Wednesday and said a police officer was injured in overnight clashes.
The anniversary of the 1973 coup that brought the dictator Augusto Pinochet to power is often marked by violence.
Pinochet oversaw a fierce aerial bombardment of the presidential palace on Sept. 11, 1973. Socialist President Salvador Allende committed suicide rather than surrender.
His death marked the start of a brutal 17-year dictatorship. The government estimates 3,095 were killed during Pinochet's rule, including about 1,200 who were forcibly disappeared.
Pinochet died under house arrest, without ever being tried on charges of illegal enrichment and human rights violations.
