James kept clean sheets in his first five appearances for the club

James, who had been capped 35 times, made an immediate impact to Pompey’s bright start to the new season, keeping clean sheets in his first five appearances for the club.
As an ever-present in the side in his first season James's displays earned him the club’s Player of the Year award as Portsmouth finished ninth and he broke David Seaman’s Barclays Premier League record of 141 clean sheets.
James went on to captain Pompey to FA Cup final success in 2008 after, in January that year, becoming only the third player, after Gary Speed and Ryan Giggs, to reach 500 Barclays Premier League appearances. In total James made 134 top-flight appearances in his four seasons at Portsmouth.
