Executive Seminar for Diplomats from Africa September 9th To October 2013

Europe's neighbouring continent has everything required for a bright future: enormous economic potential thanks to its natural resources, geographical and cultural diversity and above all people who know the value of education. The continent is now at a crossroads: will it travel the road that will unleash its energy, give it focus and direction?

Here the role of Africa's diplomats is to communicate convincingly in the international arena and interact with their partners on equal terms. The intention of the seminar is to hone the skills that will prepare them for this task.

Nations

The seminar is designed for young diplomats from Sub-Saharan Africa. The aim is to transcend political dividing lines and raise awareness of what opportunities exist for economic and political action in a regional and multilateral framework.

Neighbours

Europe and Germany are keen to demonstrate their concern for Africa by forging a meaningful partnership with the continent. That is the rationale for projects such as the Joint EU Africa Strategy. The seminar will give participants insights into Germany's recent history and economic development and also feature visits to institutions and companies with African connections. An important focus here will be the transition from a commodity-exporting economy to a manufacturing and technology-based economy. Participants will explore the implications for sustainability, the appropriate use of resources and the mobilization of local potential.

Networks

As representatives of their countries participants will enhance their international negotiating skills as well as their ability to communicate with the media and potential investors. The seminar's benefits to participants can be measured not only in terms of their career prospects but also in terms of personal contacts (diplomacy by networking). Participants get to know and trust one another and trust is an immense asset for the future. Some day somewhere they will meet again maybe even in Berlin.

Depending on the diplomats' countries of origin, the courses are either conducted in English or French.
